Right now I have the Redragon Mirage M690 which classified as a gaming mouse. Let’s see how it fared here in my review.
About it
How old?
The M690 is among the older models of Redragon considering that I found some technical info about it dated 2017. Still, I was able to buy one from a local store and it seems that people are still buying all these years.
Physical features
This is one of those radically designed mice that looks like a spacecraft from another planet. For me it does not look good actually but there were some aspects that I think exaggerated.
One example is the non-symmetrical front protrusions of the buttons. They are not aligned at all.
Battery life
It runs on a single AA battery. When I bought mine, without one and the salesman told me that they can’t test it. However, they opened the sealed box for visual inspection. As you know, the usual term here in the Philippines is replacement within 7 days for any valid concerns.
If you are to look underside, there are three power options. The top most is ECO. This only means that there is a way to save on battery power.
When I selected that mode, the light features of the mouse turned off. I am not a fan of lighting so I’m glad that turning it off means saving on power.
With such an option, I am expecting the battery to last about 80 hours as promised by its manufacturer. This is of course based on continuous gaming.
Features
The RGB lighting is its main feature but even for this affordable wireless mouse, the inclusion of a 2.4 Ghz connectivity is a good feature.
Cleaning
Cleaning this mouse could be challenging especially in the grooves in both sides of the unit. Grime could easily build up in there and there’s no other way to clean that part but to use maybe a toothpick.
The large gap between the click buttons and the body may be prone to dust accumulation. But it will also be easy to clean with a blower or vacuum cleaner.
Surface compatibility
I used it on a table with glass and it struggled to maintain a steady cursor. I guess it is not very useful on such material. However, I noticed that it has greater accuracy on top of a smooth table (mine is layered with a vinyl wrap). It is much better on such surface than on a mouse pad.
Honest Review and Personal Experience
Grip
The contours on this wireless gaming mouse is actually good if I try to fully rest my whole hand on it. I can say it is ergonomically ideal for full palm users (palm grip). Otherwise, it may be uncomfortable to use.
I for example used it for gaming and I felt soreness in my thumb joint since I am a claw grip user. It seems like the left thumb groove is too deep for this position.
Weight
This is one aspect that did not sit well with me. The mouse is heavier than my previous ones. On paper, it says that the unit is 120 grams minus the battery. When I used it for gaming, my hand started to ache a bit after about 10 minutes.
When playing, I usually lift my mouse especially for MOBA games. And this is one characteristic of the M690 that is a liability.
Shape
For me, I the radical shape is but it does affect ergonomics. If I am to fully immerse my hand on it, I can feel comfort as my thumb fits nicely on the side groove while a big part of my palm sits nicely on its body.
Tactile Response
There is a bit of a force that I need to do to press the left and right buttons. I don’t know, maybe because both does not sit on the same plane. The right click is diagonally downward relative to the left click.
The buttons are lifted higher so this also affects the amount of force to use just to press the switch.
Noise
The sound is what you would expect on a regular gaming mouse. Since it is not labeled as silent click, then I guess it has the same noise output as all other mice in the market.
It’s scroll wheel sound is minimal, in fact turning it backward is too soft to hear unless you put it near your ears when scrolling.
Pricing
It is on the affordable segment and I bought this gaming mouse for only Php 750. The store offers discounts for cash payments so I availed it and paid only Php 700.
Gaming Experience
It’s difficult to use. At first, I wanted to let my hands adjust to its radical shape. I used it for 12 hours straight but by night, my fingers feel sore.
The optical sensor seems to have a problem with accuracy. It randomly moves the cursor for about 30 pixels on the screen.
I did not have any problems with gliding but the weight of the M690 truly affected how I play. I consider it heavy and may not be suitable for smaller hands.
What I Like
- The design is fun to look at
- Silent scroll wheel
- Glides smoothly
What I don’t Like
- The surface is smudge-magnet (you can literally see the oil of your fingers)
- Not comfortable for claw or finger user
- One button on the side is too far to reach
- Left and right buttons are diagonally aligned, causes finger aches
- Optic sensor is sometimes not accurate
